Recently opened Halva is an independent bakery and patisserie offering a wide range of bread, pastries, cakes and artisan coffee. Halva is owned by Lila Sarhang, who classically trained as a pastry chef in France, before deciding to realize her dream and launch her first venture in the capital. Lila, who is also head baker, and her team handcraft and bake all the sumptuous offerings onsite every day. Always one to be tempted by sweet treats After Nyne headed down at the weekend to see what was on offer.
Halva has a fresh and spacious interior with an outside area that is an absolute sun trap. Some people were bustling in and out grabbing a quick coffee and bread and others were taking the time to stay and relax. I decided to stay in and enjoy my pastries at the same time as my surroundings. I started with a delicious savoury pastry stuffed with goat’s cheese and sundried tomatoes, which they also offered with a feta and olive filling. Swiftly followed by the most divine peanut buttery goodness I have ever put to my lips. Their peanut butter tart is every peanut butter lover’s heaven, with a crisp buttery base and a layer of jam between a creamy and crunchy topping.
Aside from that guests will also be able to choose from a wide selection of tasty treats including French traditional baguettes made using French flour known as “tradition flour”, as well as other loaves using locally sourced rye and spelt flours. The selection of breads truly reflects the creativity of the team at Halva, with several different varieties on offer.
On the way out I got tempted further by the selection of cupcakes (mainly swayed by aesthetics) and found myself leaving with the unusual but tasty flavours of bubble gum and eton mess. If these creative flavours take your fancy Halva can prepare a range of bespoke cakes for sharing with up to 24 people with just 48 hours’ notice.
After Nyne recommends Halva as the perfect spot for a casual lunch with a friend, for families or a simple morning coffee and bread run.
